Common Electrical Questions (and Their Answers)

Understanding your electrical system, how it works and what you need to do to maintain it is important. To help you get a basic understanding of your electrical system, we’re going to give you all the answers to three of the most common electrical questions that customers ask.

Three Common Electrical Questions

Q. Is our home at risk for storm surge?

A. Storm surge is something that happens when the water in a particular area rises far above sea level. This is often caused by strong winds from a storm pushing the water onto the shore and causing the water level to rise. While people in areas that are prone to flooding are most at risk for storm surge, you should ask your insurer about your location if you want to find out more.

Q. Why do I keep having outages in the same location?

A. This is one of the most common electrical questions, and it often has a fairly simple answer: bad wiring. One of the first things you should do if you’ve noticed frequent outages in your home is take a look at the type of wiring you have. If your home was built a long time ago, it could have an outdated type of wiring, or wiring that’s well past its lifespan. Your best bet is to have a professional take a look at the wiring where the outage is happening to determine the cause.

Q. Why is there so much static electricity in my home?

A. Static electricity can be caused by a lot of things, but it’s most often caused by actions such as dragging your socks across the carpet. While this can be an annoying problem to deal with, it’s not something you have to worry about when it comes to your electrical system. If you want to reduce static electricity so you’re not feeling those pesky shocks as often, you can wear rubber shoes or install specialized carpeting or rugs designed to reduce static. Of course, you can also simply remove carpeting and go with hardwood or other options!
