Electrical Safety Tips for Your Holiday Lights

Though you almost definitely have your holiday lights in place already, if you decorate for the season, it’s never too late to take into account some holiday decoration electrical safety tips so that you and your family are safe until that decor is put away again.

Keep in Mind These Electrical Safety Tips

Where did you purchase your lights, whether for the outside of the home, the tree, or elsewhere? You want to choose, if possible, lights that have some kind of safety seal of approval, or something on the box that suggests the lights have been tested. This is a big product this time of year, obviously, and so they are sold in a lot of places… and not always with quality and safety in mind.

Whether you’re re-using last year’s lights or have purchased new ones, test them out to make sure they’re all lit and running well. Some may just be worn down by time, and others could have broken in their box or wherever you’ve been storing them, so a quick test will allow you to figure out which are still usable. Consider plugging all lights into a power strip and extension cord to avoid overloading an outlet and leaving strings out where they could be tripped over or pulled by children and/or pets.

Finally, make sure that you take some precautions in order to avoid accidents and harm during this season. Make sure that you turn off all lights, for example, when going to sleep or leaving the house. This eliminates the chance for a fire that begins as a result of overheated outlets or bulbs. Also, for outdoor lights, ensure that they are attached securely so that no heavy weather or wind pulls them down and creates a hazard outdoors.
